NSPA acquires and delivers medical equipment in support of Italy, Spain and Norway

Luxembourg, 10 April 2020 -The NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) is supporting NATO nations and partners with key COVID-19 relief acquisition and transport.

A shipment with the first two Intensive Care Units ventilators acquired by NSPA arrived to Italy on 10 April 2020. This delivery is part of a larger order of 16 Intensive Care Units (ICU) ventilators requested by Italy that will be gradually fulfilled in the next few weeks. These ICU ventilators will help alleviating the current shortage of life-saving medical equipment.

On Friday 4 April, Spain received the first batch of personal protective equipment (PPE) acquired by NSPA on behalf of the nation. About half a ton of cargo arrived to Torrejon Air Base, Madrid, and it was then distributed by the Spanish Army. These supplies will help equipping Spanish troops deployed as part of the Spanish Operation "Balmis" in response to COVID-19. The NSPA team was able to deliver the equipment only four days after the urgent request from Spain.

Additionally, cargo carrying medical supplies acquired by NSPA arrived in Norway on Friday 4 April. This first shipment included masks, gloves, goggles and other protective medical equipment in support of the national effort in combating the effects of COVID-19.

"The production capacity of the suppliers is very limited at this moment, we have managed to negotiate and increase their production capability by five and ten times in some cases to be able to meet our customer's requirements", said an NSPA Official.

The current disruptions on health supply chains, competitive high demand and restrictions in the transportation domain, are posing important obstacles for nations to get their much-needed medical supplies and equipment. For that reason, many nations have entrusted NSPA to manage the acquisition and transport on their behalf.
